The Masters Hall of Fame is saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Sensei Thomas Boganski, a 10th Dan Black Belt in Taekwon-Do, at his home in Henderson, NV, on December 5. Sensei Boganski was a long-time Ambassador for the Masters Hall of Fame and was presented with a Life Achievement Award in 2007 in recognition of his many years in martial arts. Sensei Boganski also proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.

43927158_1575684971352176_r.jpeg“Master Boganski was a good man who treated me very well,” recalled Sensei Jason Carlage, who was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in 2011 by Sensei Boganski. “I was introduced to him by my teacher, Grandmaster Vernon Kam, and I became fast friends with Master Boganski. I was given the privilege to teach kenpo karate myself and I sought Master Boganski's advice for how to become the best instructor I could be. I was humbled and honored when Master Boganski told me he would like to nominate me for induction. Attending the ceremony with him is one of the highlights of my life,” Carlage stated.

Recalling their many conversations after the birth of his own children, Sensei Carlage said, “The way he spoke about his two daughters and his two grandchildren made it clear to me how much he cherished each of them. He encouraged me to love my children and made me realize how much of a blessing they are in life. I am one of many who have benefited from Master Boganski's service and acts of kindness as a veteran, a teacher, a father and a friend. As a Catholic man and member of the Knights of Columbus, Master Boganski had very strong faith and he believed in the power of prayer. I pray for his family and for the immense loss of their father and grandfather.

Master Boganski's daughters Cassandra and Natasha have started a GoFundMe page to help with the expenses of his funeral and associated needs. According to the GoFundMe page, Sensei Boganski had no life insurance to put toward funeral expenses, and his daughters also must move all of his belongings out of his apartment. The funeral alone will run some $10,000 in order to give Sensei Boganski the memorial he deserves.

With the help and support of family and friends, Sensei Thomas Boganski will be laid to rest at noon on Friday, December 20 at the Veterans Memorial at 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr, Boulder City, NV, 89005. Preceding the interment there will be a Funeral Service at Davis Funeral Home located at 6200 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV, 89119 at 10:00 a.m.

Costa Mesa, CA (For Release) -Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, a 10th Degree Black Belt (Ju Dan) in Chinese Kenpo Karate, honored three members of his own dojo with induction into the Masters Hall of Fame at the 20th Anniversary Awards Banquet at the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa. Hanshi Dan Cliff Belschner, and Shichidan Michael Gregson and Shichi Dan Jacqui Wendling joined the ranks of such martial arts luminaries as Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Cynthia “Lady Dragon” Rothrock and Dr. Robert Goldman.

“In order to be nominated and inducted [into the Masters Hall of Fame], we’re looking for twenty to thirty years of teaching and training experience,” explains Vidal in a red carpet  interview he conducted with the inductees following the ceremony. In addition to experience, candidates are nominated for their work in and contributions to their communities.

Hanshi Dan Belschner is one such example of inspiration and contribution, having continued to teach following an accident that confined him to a wheelchair. “I think it made me a stronger teacher,” he tells Vidal, “to show those students you just need to overcome. You can rise.”

Shichi Dan Wendling, who has taught high school chemistry in addition to Kenpo, explains the similarities between the two endeavors, saying, “Once you have the basics, you can build off of the basics. And that’s where the confidence comes, the ability to think on your feet and respond to uncomfortable situations.”

Costa Mesa, CA (For Release) - On Saturday evening, July 26, Senior Master of the Arts Bob White, a 10th Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate, was honored with the Legacy Award at the Masters Hall of Fame 20th Anniversary celebration. The event, which took place at the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa, featured Dr. Robert Goldman as Grandmaster of Ceremonies, action film star Sifu Cynthia Rothrock as Keynote Speaker, and a special screening of the short film “The Last Dojo.”

Since 2004 he has been involved with Royal Family Kids, an organization supporting children in foster care that today has more than 200 camps in 43 states and seven international countries.

After his introduction to the organization in 2004, Senior Master White and his wife, Barbara, began the Bob & Barbara White Invitational Youth Karate Tournament, with 100% of the profits going to the Royal Family Kids Camp program. In its 13 years, the tournament has raised more than $1 million and helped hundreds of abused and neglected children to attend the camp.

Costa Mesa, CA (For Release) - ShichiDan Jacqui Wendling, a 7th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame at the 20th Anniversary Awards Ceremony Saturday, July 27, 2019. The event, which took place at the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa, featured Dr. Robert Goldman as Grandmaster of Ceremonies and action film star Sifu Cynthia Rothrock as Keynote Speaker. Ms. Wendling was nominated for induction by Grandmaster Darryl Vidal.

A late comer to the martial arts, ShichiDan Wendling began her studies in Kenpo, a mix of Chinese and Japanese martial arts, in 1995 at the age of 38 at the Rosas Kenpo Karate Association with Sensi Joe Rosas in Chino, Calif. She earned her black belt in 2000, alongside one of her high school students, and then chose to continue as an instructor. Today Ms. Wendling is both an instructor and a member of the board.

As a lifelong athlete, competing in various sports since age 3, Ms. Wendling brought those experiences to play as she began her competitions in Kenpo. After a disappointing showing as a yellow belt in her first competition at the Long Beach Internationals, she used that experience to spur herself to train harder. She learned to read and respond to her opponents, and when she returned as a brown belt she took her division after 14 bouts.

“Martial arts are a mind set that teaches confidence, team work, composure in uncomfortable circumstances, how to present oneself and how to respond to failure, respect, and honor,” says Ms. Wendling. “Martial arts has empowered me in countless ways. To me there is no greater compliment than when your peers recognize and honor you. Thank you to my martial arts family.”

Costa Mesa, CA (For Release) - Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, a 10th Degree Black Belt (Ju Dan) in Chinese Kenpo Karate, will be honored with a Legacy Award at the 20th Anniversary Masters Hall of Fame Awards Banquet on Saturday, June 27, at the Hilton Costa Mesa Hotel. The event will feature Dr. Robert Goldman as Grandmaster of Ceremonies and Sifu Cynthia Rothrock as Keynote Speaker.

Grandmaster Vidal, who has more than 40 years of experience training in Kenpo Karate, gained notoriety in the film industry when he appeared in the original Karate Kid as himself and as the stunt double for Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. Born in San Diego, Calif., he and his family moved to Chino, where he found himself gravitating to the martial arts, inspired in part by the movies of Bruce Lee. Little did he know at the time that he would become a part of martial arts movie history.

During a competition in Los Angeles, he was asked by the director of Karate Kid if he would like to be in the movie as one of the few trained martial artists in the film. In the movie he appeared as himself in the competition scenes, but he was also asked to create what has become known as the “crane technique” as Morita’s stunt double.

“They put makeup and a bodysuit on me,” Grand Master Vidal recalled in an interview after receiving the Masters’ Silver Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, “and I appeared as the old man on the stumps on the beach. It ended up being one of the most iconic karate movies of all time, I think.”

“It is an honor and a pleasure to present Grandmaster Darryl Vidal with the Masters Hall of Fame Legacy Award in recognition of his unwavering leadership in the martial arts,” says Masters Hall of Fame Chairman Dr. Daniel Hect. “Darryl has given a lifetime of leadership and service to the martial arts community and the Masters Hall of Fame, and I am proud to have him as a colleague and a friend.”

He began studying karate with Sensei William Stoner of New Castle, Pennsylvania, whose school later had the honor of joining The Japan Karate Federation under Sensei Fumio Demura. When Kanan got his breakthrough role as Mike Barnes after being chosen over 2000 other hopefuls by Oscar-winning director, John Avildsen, he worked extensively with Sensei Demura and fight choreographer Pat Johnson to hone his technique.

“I am honored to be in the presence of so many gifted martial artists and teachers,” said Kanan about his induction. “I dedicate this to my late Sensei, William Stoner, and Sensei Fumio Demura. These two men have given me more than they could possibly know. I am eternally grateful to them both and humbled to have had the good fortune to consider myself their student. With sincerity and humility, I hope that I may bring honor to my teachers and the martial arts, and demonstrate the highest precepts of what it means to be a martial artist.”

Chicago, IL (For Release) - A CNN opinion article by F. Clark Power, a professor of psychology and education at the University of Notre Dame, on the Russian Olympic doping scandal profiled the work of anti-aging and sports medicine pioneer and martial arts expert Dr. Robert Goldman. The article refers to Dr. Goldman’s study, first published in 1992 and reported on in Sports Illustrated in 1997, of 198 athletes in power and combat sports. In that study, Dr. Goldman, a member of the Masters Hall of Fame, found that more than half of the athletes interviewed said that they would take a performance enhancing drug, even if it would mean their death.

More than half of athletes studied (52%) said they would be willing to take a performance enhancing drug that guaranteed success, even if it would result in their death.

Grandmaster Daniel Hect, Sifu Alan Goldberg, Dr. Robert Goldman Masters Hall of Fame 2016 OH

Dr. Robert Goldman MD, PhD, DO, FAASP is a specialist in anti-aging medicine and sports medicine with degrees from Central America Health Sciences University, School of Medicine in Belize and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at MidWestern University. He is also the founder or co-founder of several organizations including the National Academy of Sports Medicine in Chicago, the World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine, and the International Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Goldman’s work has brought him wide recognition in the worlds of medicine and sports.

In addition to his work in medicine, Dr. Goldman, or “Dr. Bob” as he is known in the martial arts world, is a black belt in Karate and a Chinese weapons expert. A four-sport All-College athlete and three-time recipient of the John F. Kennedy Physical Fitness Award, Dr. Goldman also holds more than 20 world strength records and has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He is a respected member of the Masters Hall of Fame, which is dedicated to recognizing excellence in the martial arts.

The study that Dr. Goldman conducted, and which he related in his book Death in the Locker Room II: Drugs and Sports, first asked participants if they would be willing to take a performance enhancing drug if they were guaranteed they would win and would not be caught. Fully 193 of the respondents replied in the affirmative. He then asked if they would still be willing to take the drug if they knew it would result in their death within 5 years. Fifty-two percent of those athletes said they would still be willing to take the drug. A very troubling result.

Power relates these results in his CNN opinion article in which he comments on what he considers the “futility” of dealing with doping in sports through threats of punishment alone. The concern, he suggests, is that athletes see the disparity between the amount of money spent on promoting winning in sports compared to promoting the building of character.

Dr. Robert Goldman is available for interviews on this topic. For more information about Dr. Goldman, visit his webpage at DrBobGoldman.info. View the CNN article here.

Frank Dux - Secret ManAustin, TX (For Release) – Hanshi Daniel Hect, CEO of the Masters Hall of Fame, has announced that martial arts legend Frank Dux will be the keynote speaker at the 2016 Masters Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony in San Antonio, Texas. The event will take place on Saturday, June 4, at the Hilton San Antonio Airport Hotel. This will be the first of two awards events; the second ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 18, at the Sheraton Columbus Capitol Square in Columbus, OH.

“We are proud and honored to have Frank Dux as our keynote speaker for our San Antonio awards ceremony. He is not only a legend in the martial arts but a man I am proud to call a friend.”
Hanshi Daniel Hect, CEO of the Masters Hall of Fame

Born in Canada and raised in California’s San Fernando Valley, Dux was fascinated with the martial arts. Unable to afford tuition to any of the local schools, he recalls how he would watch through the window of such masters as Bill Ryusaki, Bob Ozman, Bong Soo Han, S.B. Moon and John Leone. Through this eclectic “auditing” of styles, Dux developed his own mixed style that he later codified into what he called Dux Ryu Ninjutsu.

In 1975 Dux entered into the Kumite, an event that is considered by some as the predecessor for Mixed Martial Arts. It was said to be a no-holds-barred competition that matched fighters from around the world. Dux entered as a heavyweight and eventually came away with the championship. His experience was written about in Black Belt magazine in 1980 and later became the basis for the 1988 film Bloodsport, in which Jean-Claude Van Damme played Dux.

Dux was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in 2011, receiving the Platinum Life Achievement Award for his contributions to the martial arts. “We are proud and honored to have Frank Dux as our keynote speaker for our San Antonio awards ceremony,” says Hect. “He is not only a legend in the martial arts but a man I am proud to call a friend.”

In addition to his induction into the Masters Hall of Fame, Sifu Huffman is a member of the International Realistic Martial Arts Association (IRMAA) and the International Martial Arts Council of America (IMAC). “To be a true Martial Artist you must train realistically. You can only fight the way you practice.” Sifu Michael Huffman

Sifu Huffman began his martial arts training at the age of 6 in American Karate, later training in Aikido and Muay Thai in high school. In college he took up Kung Fu, Aikijitsu and Krav Maga, but did not truly find his home in martial arts until he met his current instructor Grandmaster Robert Suttles and Sigung Donny Wilhelm. Under them he has studied Kajukenbo, Daito Rye AikiJujitsu, Wing Chung, Escrima and American Open Style. However, his dedication has been to Kajukenbo.

Guys

The style of Kajukenbo began in the late 1940s in Hawaii, through the work of martial arts masters Peter Choo, Frank Ordonez, Joe Holck, Chalrence Chang and Adriano Emperado. The form combines element of several styles: Karate and Tang Soo Do Korean Karate, Judo and Jujitsu, Kenpo and Boxing (both Western and Chinese style). Kajukenbo blends these different styles into a mixture of striking, kicking, throwing, takedowns, joint locks and weapon disarmament.

A believer in what is known as “Realistic Training,” Sifu Huffman teaches that a martial artist must train the way he expects to perform. “To be a true Martial Artist you must train realistically,” he says. “You can only fight the way you practice. I am greatly inspired by Psalm 144:1, which says, ‘Praise the Lord my rock, who trains my hand for war, and my fingers for battle.’ I am honored to be inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame with so many people I have admired for years.”

Hollywood, CA (For Release) – The Masters Hall of Fame inducted Kancho John Chang, a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, at the 2015 Awards Banquet sponsored by Monster Energy on Saturday, June 6. The historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony, was the venue for this signature event. Martial arts actor T.J. Storm hosted the evening as Master of Ceremonies, and Martial Arts History Museum President Michael Matsuda presented the keynote address.

“This award is special for me because it acknowledges my years of hard work combining these different styles to form Chan Tai Do.” Kancho John Chang

Kancho Chang first studied Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Chin na and Kung Fu while a Chinese refugee in Malaysia, forced to leave Vietnam, after the Vietnam War. At the age of eight his family immigrated to the United States, where his father forbad his study of the martial arts in the fear that he might injure another child and possibly lead to the family’s deportation. To get around this, Kancho Chang became involved in grappling in junior and senior high school, joining the school wrestling teams. Unable to afford a four-year institution, he attended Foothill Junior College where he found a thriving Shotokan Karate group, eventually working his way up to 4th Degree Black Belt.

In 2003 Kancho Chang brought all of his martial arts experiences together to found Chang Tai Do, a martial arts form based on a mixture of Kung Fu, Karate, and the grappling methods of wrestling and Chin na. His Chang Tai Do group now holds classes in the Bay Area cities of Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Altos and Menlo Park.

“I am very honored to accept this award from the Masters Hall of Fame,” says Kancho Chang. “I would like to thank my family, especially my wife and daughter, for their support, dedication and patience. I would also like to thank Senseis Rick Roberts, Brian Keats and Gene Tibon for their mentoring and friendship. Thank you also to all the parents, students, friends and families that have made Chang Tai Do unique and special. There are no words to express how humbled and honored I have been for all their help.”

“I want to thank Professor Jorge Cerezoli and Grandmaster Hugo Alberto Gomez Fernandez, who took me off the streets and put me onto the right path. Their guidance changed my life completely.” Master Rafael Alderete

A native of Rosario, Argentina, Master Alderete began his studies in the 1970s in K.A.P.U., a martial arts form developed in Argentina by Grandmaster Hugo Alberto Gomez Fernandez. This would be a turning point in his life, which up to then had been on what he admits was a wrong path. “I want to thank Professor Jorge Cerezoli and Grandmaster Hugo Alberto Gomez Fernandez, who took me off the streets and put me onto the right path.,” says Master Alderete. “Their guidance changed my life completely.”

With his induction into the Masters Hall of Fame, Master Alderete is now turning his sights back to Argentina, with plans to open a school in Rosario, Santa Fe. His goal is to give back to his community in recognition of the benefits he has received through the martial arts.

“There are a lot of youngsters over there that need help,” Master Alderete explains. “Because of the level of poverty, they don’t have the opportunity to be guided properly. I believe that by using the martial arts as a tool, I can help these youngsters. As a boy I grew up on the streets having a lot of problems. Now it’s time for me to bring what I have learned back to my own people.”

Master Alderete also hopes to take the ideals of the Masters Hall of Fame back to South America, to acknowledge the efforts of those already teaching. “I want to thank Chairman Daniel Hect and everyone else at the Masters Hall of Fame for the tremendous work they have done, particularly this year. I believe that such an event as this needs to take place in every country because there are many martial arts masters who are still unknown.”

Tang500web-1439Sifu Tang began his martial arts training informally at age 6, later taking formal training in kickboxing and American Kenpo under Grandmaster Ed Parker’s system. Although he also studied Lama Kenpo Karate with Lua integration, Tai Kwon Do and Tai Chi, he always wanted to learn Wing Chun Kung Fu, inspired by Master Ti Lung and Master Bruce Lee. Finally in 1993 he found a Wing Chung School under Chanh Wah Shun’s lineage and began attending three times each week under his first Wing Chun Sifu, Grandmaster Donald Fling.

Since that early training, Sifu Tang has had the honor to study with several other Wing Chung masters, including Sifu Jerry McKinley, and Sifu Franco Lung. His most important and influential teacher has been Sifu Grandmaster Wong Long Ching, the direct and first generation student of Grandmaster Ip Man. In early 2012, Sifu Tang opened Wing Chun Temple in Signal Hill, CA, to carry on the legacy of Grandmaster Wong Long Ching.

"By receiving this award I hope to bring awareness to our bright future, the students of Shaolin Kung Fu Lion Dance Team.” Master Peter Chan

Master Chan began his studies in Hong Jia Quan and lion dancing at the age of 12, and recalls the hours of practice to perfect his art. “If you practice martial arts without total concentration, without making an effort, without correct practice, without attentiveness during practice, the Master can fling you or perhaps scold you,” he says. Master Chan is the third generation in lineage from martial arts master Lam Sai Wing; his direct Sifu is Grandmaster Dr. Chiu Chi Ling.

Along with his wife Amy Chan, Master Chan is the founder of Shaolin Kung Fu Lion Dance Team, based in the Chinatown section of Oakland, CA. Master Chan founded the company, a selffunded nonprofit, to teach traditional Chinese culture and Lion Dance techniques to a new generation for free. The training focuses on the martial spirit of saywuy and the qualities of politeness (luy), uprightness of mind (yee), honesty (lien) and sense of honor and respect (chih) in order to help students excel in life and become better individuals.

“I am humbled, honored, and at the same time excited to receive this Masters Hall of Fame award,” says Master Chan. “By receiving this award I hope to bring awareness to our bright future, the students of Shaolin Kung Fu Lion Dance Team.”

The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of the premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. The association recognizes exceptional Martial Arts Leaders and Legends through induction into the Masters Hall of Fame. Los Angeles, CA – Sifu Curtis Letson, a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Kung Fu, was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame at the association’s annual Awards Banquet on August 1, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. This year the banquet was held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Long Beach Internationals, a premier karate championship founded by legendary American Kenpo Grandmaster Ed Parker. Sifu Letson, who was honored for Outstanding Contributions to the Martial Arts, also holds the rank of Guru in Kuntao Silat, a Filipino martial art which evolved from Kung Fu.

                        Sifu Curtis Letson

“Without the time and effort of continued practice and self-discovery no one can achieve mastery.” Sifu Curtis Letson

Sifu Letson began his martial arts training in karate while in elementary school, but after two years of training he turned to wrestling, competing through his junior high school and high school years. In 2001 Sifu Letson returned to the martial arts, beginning his training in Kung Fu under Elder Master Gary Grooms and later with fellow Masters Hall of Fame inductee Master Michael Reid. He continues to study with Master Reid in Kung Fu and Tai Chi.

As a system of martial arts, Shaolin Kung Fu developed more than 1600 years ago in the temples of China and has since developed into a comprehensive martial art featuring both open hand and weapon-based combat techniques. Training in Kung Fu is designed to help individuals to respond effectively and adapt and perform in a variety of situations. Kung Fu spread widely throughout Southeast Asia and the Philippines where it evolved into Kuntao Silat.

In 2010 Sifu Letson began his training in Kuntao Silat under Pendakar Guru Bahati Mershant. Guru Bahati was a senior student of Willem de Thouars, affectionately known as “Uncle Bill,” who is credited with bringing Kuntao Silat to the United States.  Sifu Letson credits Kuntao Silat with improving his understanding of form and function in body mechanics and increasing his explosiveness in action.

“Without the time and effort of continued practice and self-discovery no one can achieve mastery,” explained Sifu Letson. “I am still traveling that path and am humbled and thankful for everyone who has walked it with me through the years.”

Sifu Letson currently heads Dragon Hand Martial Arts in Littleton, Colo., which specializes in Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Kuntao Silat, as well as Kali and other martial arts. The school is proud to bring in martial arts masters from around the world to enhance the training provided, including Guru Bahati Mershant and Master Michael Reid.
